FSHS Girls' Basketball
Fairmont Senior girls' basketball team is ready for takeoff this year. The athletic department has a high rank in the state. The athletes are known for their team spirit, great skills, and dedication. I interviewed one of the players about the season. Junior, Kaden Whaley, has been playing since second grade and this is her third year playing for the school. Their first game this year was against Morgantown High School. Morgantown won. Their most recent was on December 10th against East Side. We were victorious. We are now 2-1. Kaden. along with fellow teammates Tyaira Horton, Taylor Toothman, Jasmine Johnson, Kelsey Morrone, Emily Staler, and Abby Staler plus others, aspire to return to states in Charleston this year!

Time To Get In The Pool!
This year Fairmont Senior's boys swim team is getting a head start on making their way to the top of the totum pole.
Last Saturday at Fairmont State, the boys finished up at 4th overall and Taylor Campbell at 9th for his events. Their next meet is going to be December 17, at Elkins, vs. North Marion, Elkins and possibly East. There are 6 meets total in the season left and afterwards is Regionals, followed by states in Charelston.
Brandon Ralston, a Junior made it to states last year and has a goal to get there again with his team. His hopes for this season are to build tradition and faith with the new coaches this year, Dion and Michelle Bright, as well as the new swimmers.
Ralston said, "Trying to build the dynasty that once was FSHS swimming is going to be a challenge, but with the great attitudes of those on our team, I know we can do it!"

It is that time of year again. Santa Claus is coming to town and children watch outside of their windows praying for a snow day. However, with snow days and Santa, there is something else that comes along with them. Icy roads and snowy windshields come along too. Both snow and ice are very hazardous and can cause severe wrecks. Although we haven't seen much snow yet, it is expected that snow will come. There have been a few accidents in which cars have slid into ditches or bumped into other cars, but nothing major yet. It is very likely that we will see a rough winter and a ton of snow so here are a few tips in order to drive safely and survive the holiday season:
-Check the weather report for your area.
-Drive slower and take your time.
-Only drive if necessary.
-Get winter/new tires or even purchase chains for your tires.
Make smarter decisions and think things through.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers
On December 13th, the state cheer competition for Double A Division will take place at the Charleston Civics Center. Cheer teams from all over the state of West Virginia will be there. Rivals, East Fairmont and Fairmont Senior will be going head to head for a chance at the title. With East being Regional Champs beating West by a total of only four points we could all say the bears will be seeking revenge. The Fairmont Senior Varsity cheer team has prepped for this day since the beginning of June; some their whole cheer career. For seniors Mecca Peterson, Amanda Denicourt, Charley Clayton, Rachel Martin, Maddie Stevenski, and Lance Puccio, this will be their last chance to show everyone that they will lead their team to victory and show what they are made of. Lipstick will be smeared, tears will be shed, and stunts may fall, but with 10 fingers and the four T’s (Tx4) the Fairmont Senior Varsity Cheer team will surely make you wish you were them (when they win the states title, of course).

Interactivities
At Fairmont Senior High School, there are plenty of club organizations to join. I'm a member of Interact Club. The activities this club offers is opportunities throughout the whole month of December to volunteer at the Soup Opera and the First Presbyterian Church. Back around October, I, along with four friends, volunteered at the Soup Opera for three hours on a Saturday morning. We made breakfast and served it to the less fortunate. On December 9th, I will be volunteering at the First Presbyterian Church to wrap shoes for the needy. Also, on December 21st, I will be volunteering at the Soup Opera again. Many students have signed up to do multiple activities for Interact and Key Club. The volunteer hours go towards community service and graduation requirements.
When I interviewed Mrs. Sayre about Interact / Key Club, her answers truly came from the heart. Mrs. Sayre's favorite part about being in charge of these clubs is being able to get students out there volunteering. She has been head of these clubs for four years now. Although she enjoys seeing the students' efforts to volunteer, she thinks they should willingly want to help the community.

Basketball Season Begins!
It's that time of the year again to start heading to the Armory on Friday nights instead of the East/West stadium for those Friday Night Lights!
Fairmont Senior boys basketball is starting December 3rd with a scrimmage against Raven's Wood and Friday, December 5th also at home, against Wheeling Park. The official first game is December 13th against North Marion, an away game, at North Marion High School.
Marquis Drake, a Junior and number 11 on varsity, said his team is ready this year and definitely pumped up for their first game. The team this year consists of 11 players total, consisting of upperclassmen and 3 sophomores as well.
"This year my goal is to get to go to the State Championship with my team. We've went almost every single year since I've been a freshman, but this year I want us to win the entire thing. It would make everyone's year and especially ours to complete that."
Marquis also said that with the help of their coach, David Retton, and assistant Frank Skubis, that it should be an easy task with all the hard work they will be continuing to do. Throughout the off season, they pumped iron in the weight room and practiced drills for try-outs. Since tryouts are over now, the real work starts with practices everydat as well as multiple games a week.
"It's a busy season, but I enjoy putting the work into something I love so much. Being out there on the court with my team is the best feeling, knowing I contribute on the team in any way."
Marquis knows the team is a great group to support, so don't forget to cheer on the Polar Bears this basketball season and watch the bears drunk on the Huskies! Let's lead them through a fun and successful season!
